Guided hike to Kjerag Bolten (every Thursday)
DYOP’s more challenging hike, which is a full day out. Kjerag is a mountain in
Forsand municipality in Rogaland County. It is 1110 m (3640 ft) above sea, or fjord level.
From the hotel pick up in Sandnes, it is around an hour half spectacular drive up the
mountain to where we park, next to a cafe at the hike start point. This cafe has to have
some of the most epic views in Europe, and is the chance to enjoy refreshments and
refuel before or straight after the hike. The hike can take between 2-3 hours each way
depending on your pace, but with so much to take in and admire, there really is no rush.
Mountains as far as the eyes can see make you realize just how vast the Norwegian
landscape is. The stunning views, clean air and some steep climbs all contribute to this
fantastic challenge, all enough to let you know you have hiked up a mountain, so being in
relatively good shape or a few prior walks would be advised to appreciate it all the more.
Here at DYOP we recommend taking a personal water bottle with you, as when you
reach near the top you can fill your bottle straight from the source. The freshest,
cleanest, coolest natural mountain water to hydrate and invigorate your body. Water
straight from the Nordic Gods! Reaching the peak is the awesome kjerag boulder
(kjeragbolten) wedged in the mountain crevice with a 241 m (791 ft) clear drop either
side. It is a fantastic sight and gives the opportunity to the brave for the ultimate ‘selfie’
photo stood on top of the Boulder. The descent back to the car park once again treats
the eyes to another visual extravaganza
The descent back to the cafe once again treats your eyes to another visual
extravaganza. Then tired but exhilarated it is time to relax on the car ferry back to
Sandnes. Here we sail through the fjord for a completely opposite perspective of the
mountain fjord just climbed before, but from below. The sail back to Sandnes and the
hotel takes about an hour. It’s a long day but phenomenal taking in the sights from on
top off and sailing through the bottom of the fjord looking up. The body has had a great
work out, the lungs are full of clean air and amazing feelings of inspiration, living life to
the maximum and being exhilarated. It really is an ultimate, outdoor, visual experience to
